Red cell folate test
Quick answer: A red cell folate test measures folate stored inside red blood cells, which reflects your folate level over the past few months. It is ordered for some types of anaemia, poor diet or gut absorption problems.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
Normal ranges differ between labs, so compare your result with the range printed on your report and discuss it with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
A low red cell folate can point to poor intake over the last few months, gut absorption problems such as coeliac disease, heavy alcohol use or some medicines, and can cause anaemia. A high level is usually seen with supplements and is rarely a concern.
Who usually has this test
People with anaemia with large red cells, poor diet, gut absorption problems, heavy alcohol use, or those on medicines that affect folate.
Risks and aftercare
You may have mild soreness at the needle site.

Questions about this test
What is the difference between red cell folate and serum folate?
Serum folate shows recent intake and can change after a single meal. Red cell folate reflects stores over the past two to three months, so it gives a longer-term picture.
Should I take folic acid while trying to conceive?
Folic acid is routinely advised for women trying to conceive and in early pregnancy to help prevent neural tube defects. Your doctor will advise the dose, which may be higher in some situations.
Why is folate tested with vitamin B12?
Both deficiencies can cause the same type of anaemia. Doctors check both because treating folate alone when B12 is low can hide B12 deficiency and allow nerve damage to continue.
