If the result is outside the usual range

A low count can point to anaemia from many causes, including blood loss or lack of nutrients. A high count can be seen with dehydration, smoking, lung disease, thalassaemia trait or polycythaemia.

Who usually has this test

Anyone having a routine blood count, and people with anaemia or high haemoglobin.

Questions about this test

Why is my RBC count high but haemoglobin low?

This pattern is common in thalassaemia trait, where there are many small red cells. Haemoglobin electrophoresis can check for it.

Is the RBC count the same as haemoglobin?

No, the RBC count is the number of red cells, while haemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein inside them. Both are part of a CBC.

Can pregnancy lower the RBC count?

Yes, blood volume rises in pregnancy, which dilutes the red cells. Doctors read results with this in mind.
