Quick answer: This test separates the types of haemoglobin in your blood to find abnormal forms, such as those in thalassaemia and sickle cell disease. It is used to check for thalassaemia trait, sickle cell and other haemoglobin disorders, often when red cells are small.

How the test is done

  1. 1Blood is drawn into a purple-top tube
  2. 2No fasting is needed
  3. 3The lab separates haemoglobin types, often by HPLC or electrophoresis
  4. 4The share of HbA, HbA2, HbF and any abnormal types is reported

What your results can mean

Reading your report

Iron deficiency can affect some results, so your doctor will read them with your iron tests; discuss any abnormal result with them.

If the result is outside the usual range

A raised HbA2 can point to beta thalassaemia trait, and abnormal bands can point to sickle cell, HbE or other variants. Iron deficiency can lower HbA2 and hide thalassaemia trait.

Who usually has this test

Couples planning pregnancy, women early in pregnancy, and people with small red cells not explained by lack of iron.

Risks and aftercare

Bruising is possible; genetic counselling is advised if a trait is found.
