Pelvis X-ray

What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A pelvis X-ray can show fractures of the pelvic ring or hips, arthritis in the hip or sacroiliac joints, changes in hip joint shape, or bone changes that need further tests.
Who usually has this test
Older people after a fall, people with hip, groin or buttock pain, and people after a road accident or other major injury.
Risks and aftercare
The X-ray is not felt, but because the beam passes close to the womb and ovaries, it is very important to tell staff if there is any chance you are pregnant.

Questions about this test
Is a pelvis X-ray safe if I am trying to conceive?
The dose is low, and a single X-ray is not expected to affect future fertility. Tell staff if you could already be pregnant, as they may ask about your period or suggest timing the X-ray early in your cycle.
Can a pelvis X-ray show the uterus or ovaries?
No, a plain X-ray does not show these organs clearly. A pelvic or transvaginal ultrasound is used to look at the uterus and ovaries.
Why are my feet turned in for a pelvis X-ray?
Turning the feet in rotates the thigh bones so the neck of each hip is seen at full length. This helps show fractures and joint shape.
