Hip X-ray
Quick answer: A hip X-ray shows the hip joint, where the thigh bone meets the pelvis, and can show fractures, arthritis and joint shape problems. Doctors order it for hip pain, a fall, limping, or to check the hip joint in children. The frog-leg view shows the hip from a different angle.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A hip X-ray can show a fracture of the top of the thigh bone, narrowing of the joint from arthritis, changes in the shape of the ball or socket, or loss of blood supply to the hip bone. In children it can show a slipped growth plate or other joint problems.
Who usually has this test
Older people after a fall, people with hip or groin pain or a limp, and children with hip pain or a limp.
Risks and aftercare
Turning the leg out can be sore if the hip is painful; the dose is low, and a pelvic X-ray is one where you should always tell staff if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test
Can hip pain come from the back?
Yes, problems in the lower back can cause pain in the buttock and hip area. If your hip X-ray is normal, your doctor may look at the spine instead.
What is a frog-leg view of the hip?
It is a view taken with your knees bent and dropped outwards, like a frog's legs. It shows the ball of the hip from the side and is often used in children and young adults.
Can a hip fracture be missed on X-ray?
Sometimes a small crack does not show on the first X-ray. If you cannot bear weight after a fall, doctors may order an MRI or CT scan even when the X-ray looks normal.
