Questions about this test
What is the difference between a lipase and an amylase test?
Both are enzymes from the pancreas that rise in pancreatitis. Lipase stays raised for longer and is more specific to the pancreas, so many doctors now prefer it.
Does a high lipase level always mean pancreatitis?
No. A much raised lipase with typical pain strongly suggests pancreatitis, but milder rises can happen with kidney disease, bowel problems and some medicines. Your doctor reads it with your symptoms and sometimes a scan.
Can very high triglycerides cause pancreatitis?
Yes. Very high triglycerides are one known cause of acute pancreatitis, along with gallstones and alcohol. Your doctor may check your triglycerides if your lipase is raised.
