How the test is done

  1. 1A nurse confirms your details and the HLA-B51 request
  2. 2A vein near your elbow is cleaned
  3. 3A needle collects a tube of blood
  4. 4The lab checks for the HLA-B51 gene marker

What your results can mean

Reading your report

Many healthy people carry HLA-B51, so the result only supports a diagnosis made on your symptoms.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive result can support a diagnosis of Behcet's disease in someone with typical symptoms, such as repeated mouth and genital ulcers or eye inflammation. It is also common in healthy people, so it cannot diagnose Behcet's alone.

Who usually has this test

People with recurring mouth ulcers together with genital ulcers, eye inflammation or skin problems.

Risks and aftercare

Nothing special afterwards; like other gene markers, the result does not change over time.
