If the result is outside the usual range
A positive result can support a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis or inflammatory eye disease (uveitis) when symptoms fit. Many healthy people are HLA-B27 positive and never develop these conditions.
Who usually has this test
Young adults with long-lasting back pain and stiffness that is worse in the morning, or with recurrent red, painful eyes.

Questions about this test
Does HLA-B27 positive mean I have ankylosing spondylitis?
No. Most people with HLA-B27 never get it. Diagnosis depends on your symptoms, examination and scans of the spine and pelvis.
Will my children inherit HLA-B27?
Each child has about a one in two chance of inheriting it from a parent who carries it. Most who inherit it stay healthy.
Why is this test done only once?
HLA-B27 is a gene marker you are born with, so the result stays the same for life.
