Allergy profile (food and inhalant)
Quick answer: This package measures IgE antibodies in your blood against a group of common food and/or airborne allergens. The exact list of tests in this package is available from the hospital. Doctors usually order it when you have symptoms such as sneezing, wheeze, rashes or reactions to food, to help find likely triggers.
- SampleBlood
- TakesAbout 5 minutes for the blood draw
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed; antihistamines do not usually affect blood allergy tests.
How the test is done
- 1Staff confirm whether a food, inhalant or combined panel is requested
- 2A nurse draws blood from a vein in your arm
- 3One or two tubes cover the whole panel
- 4The lab measures IgE to each allergen on the list
What your results can mean
Reading your report
A positive result shows sensitisation, not always a true allergy, so your doctor matches it with your symptoms.
If the result is outside the usual range
Raised IgE to an allergen shows sensitisation, which can match allergy to things like dust mites, pollen, pets or certain foods. Many people are sensitised without having symptoms, so results are matched with your history.
Who usually has this test
People with recurrent sneezing, wheeze, eczema, hives or reactions to food, when skin prick testing is not suitable.
Risks and aftercare
A small bruise is possible; carry on with any allergy medicines your doctor has prescribed.

Questions about this test
Is a blood allergy test as useful as a skin prick test?
Both look for IgE sensitisation and are useful. A blood test is handy when you have widespread eczema, cannot pause antihistamines, or skin testing is not available.
Can a blood allergy test say how severe a reaction will be?
Not reliably. A high level makes allergy more likely, but it does not predict how serious a reaction would be. Your history matters most.
Do I need to avoid all foods that test positive?
Not necessarily. Only foods that match real symptoms usually need avoiding. Ask your doctor before cutting foods out, especially for children.
