  2. 2A vein in your arm is cleaned
  3. 3Blood is drawn into a tube suitable for viral genetic testing
  4. 4The lab reads the virus's genetic code to name its genotype

What your results can mean

Reading your report

The report names the genotype found; your liver specialist explains what it means for your treatment.

If the result is outside the usual range

The report names the genotype, usually a letter from A to H. Some genotypes are linked with different chances of response to interferon treatment and different disease patterns.

Who usually has this test

People with long-term hepatitis B being considered for certain treatments, mainly under a liver specialist.

Risks and aftercare

No special aftercare; your specialist explains how the genotype affects your plan.

Questions about this test

Why does hepatitis B genotype matter?

Different genotypes can behave a little differently over time and respond differently to interferon. For tablet treatments, genotype usually matters less.

Does genotyping work if my viral load is very low?

The test needs enough virus in the blood to read. If your viral load is very low, the lab may not be able to give a genotype.

Do I need hepatitis B genotyping before pregnancy?

Not usually. Viral load and HBeAg are more useful for planning pregnancy care.
