Reading your report

If the result is outside the usual range

A raised HbF can be seen with beta thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, hereditary persistence of foetal haemoglobin and pregnancy. Some medicines, such as hydroxyurea, also raise it.

Who usually has this test

People being checked for thalassaemia or sickle cell disease, and some people with unexplained anaemia.

Risks and aftercare

Bruising is possible; genetic counselling may be offered if a trait is found.

Questions about this test

Is a raised HbF harmful?

HbF itself is not harmful and can even ease sickle cell disease. The raised level is a clue to the underlying condition.

Is HbF higher in babies?

Yes, babies are born with high HbF, which falls over the first months of life. Results in infants are read with their age in mind.

What is the Kleihauer test?

It is a related test that counts the baby's red cells in the mother's blood after bleeding or birth. It helps decide the anti-D dose for Rh-negative mothers.
