Cysticercosis antibody (IgG and IgM) test
Quick answer: This test checks your blood for antibodies to the pork tapeworm larva that causes cysticercosis. Doctors order it, usually with a brain scan, when they suspect neurocysticercosis, for example after a seizure.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
Antibodies can remain after a past infection, so the result is read with your scan; discuss it with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
A positive result can mean current or past infection with the pork tapeworm larva. A negative result does not rule out neurocysticercosis, especially with a single cyst in the brain.
Who usually has this test
People with new seizures, headaches or brain scan findings that suggest cysticercosis, especially in areas where it is common.
Risks and aftercare
Bruising at the needle site is possible.

Questions about this test
How do people get cysticercosis?
It is caught by swallowing tapeworm eggs, usually from food or water contaminated by someone carrying the tapeworm. Handwashing and safe food help prevent it.
Is a blood test enough to diagnose neurocysticercosis?
No. A CT or MRI brain scan is the main test. Blood antibodies support the diagnosis.
What do IgG and IgM antibodies mean?
IgM is more often linked with recent infection, while IgG can show current or past infection. Your doctor reads both with your scan.
