Questions about this test
Why is timing important for a newborn CMV urine test?
Testing within the first three weeks of life shows whether the baby was infected before birth. After that, a positive result may come from infection after birth.
How is urine collected from a baby?
A soft sterile bag is stuck around the genitals, or a cotton pad is placed in the nappy, and urine is collected when the baby passes it.
Can congenital CMV be treated?
Some babies with symptoms are offered antiviral treatment, which may help hearing and development. A paediatrician will advise.
