What your results can mean

Reading your report

A positive IgM usually suggests a recent or current infection and a positive IgG a past infection or immunity, but your doctor will read the result alongside your symptoms. In pregnancy an avidity test may be added.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive IgG with negative IgM usually means past infection, which is very common. A positive IgM can suggest a recent or reactivated infection, or be a false positive, so in pregnancy an avidity test helps judge timing.

Who usually has this test

Pregnant women with a flu-like illness or a scan concern, egg and sperm donors and recipients, and people with weak immunity.

Risks and aftercare

Most people have only a small bruise; no other care is needed.

Questions about this test

Why are egg and sperm donors tested for CMV?

A first CMV infection in pregnancy carries the greatest risk to a baby. Clinics may match CMV-negative recipients with CMV-negative donors to lower this risk.

How can I lower my chance of CMV in pregnancy?

CMV spreads through saliva and urine of young children. Washing hands after nappy changes and not sharing food or cups with toddlers helps.

Can CMV IgM stay positive for months?

Yes. CMV IgM can stay positive long after an infection, which is why an avidity test is often added in pregnancy.
