Central line tip culture
Quick answer: This test checks the tip of a removed central venous catheter for bacteria or yeast. It is used in hospital when a line infection is suspected, usually together with blood cultures.

- Before the testNo preparation is needed; the care team collects the sample when the line is removed.
How the test is done
- 1The central line is removed by a nurse or doctor

- 3The tip is placed in a sterile container and sent to the lab
- 4The lab rolls the tip on a culture plate and counts colonies
What your results can mean
Reading your report
The result is read with blood culture findings to decide whether the line caused the infection.
If the result is outside the usual range
A high number of bacteria or yeast on the tip, together with a matching blood culture, can point to a line-related bloodstream infection. Low counts may reflect contamination or harmless colonisation.
Who usually has this test
Patients in hospital with a central line who develop fever or signs of infection.
Risks and aftercare
Pressure is applied where the line was, and the site is watched for bleeding.
Names and options
Also called: catheter tip culture, CVC tip culture

Questions about this test
Why is a blood culture taken at the same time?
A line tip can carry germs without causing infection. A matching germ in the blood makes a line infection more likely.
Is the tip cultured if I have no fever?
Usually not, as guidelines advise culturing tips only when infection is suspected. Routine culture of every tip is not helpful.
Does removing the line hurt?
Most people feel only a pulling sensation. Pressure is put on the site afterwards to stop bleeding.
