Questions about this test
Why is beta-2 microglobulin measured in myeloma?
It reflects how much disease is present and is used to help stage myeloma. Repeat tests can help track response to treatment.
Can kidney problems affect the result?
Yes. The kidneys clear beta-2 microglobulin, so reduced kidney function raises the level. Your doctor reads it with your creatinine.
Does a high level mean I have cancer?
Not by itself. Infections, inflammation and kidney problems can also raise it. It is mainly used in people already being checked for blood cancers.
