What your results can mean

A positive result is read with liver tests and symptoms, so discuss it with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive result can be seen with autoimmune hepatitis, especially at higher levels. Low positive results can also be seen with some viral infections and other conditions, so it is not a diagnosis by itself.

Who usually has this test

Questions about this test

What is autoimmune hepatitis?

It is a condition in which the immune system attacks the liver, causing inflammation. It can be treated, so finding it early matters.

Can I have a positive ASMA without liver disease?

Yes. Low levels can appear with viral infections and in some healthy people. Your doctor looks at your liver tests and other antibodies.

What other tests are done with ASMA?

Doctors often check ANA, IgG levels and liver function tests, and sometimes a liver biopsy, to confirm autoimmune hepatitis.
