  • In fertility careALP normally rises in later pregnancy because the placenta makes it, so results are read with that in mind.

Questions about this test

How do doctors tell whether high ALP is from the liver or bone?

They often check GGT at the same time. If GGT is also high, the liver is the likely source; if GGT is normal, bone is more likely.

Is high ALP normal in pregnancy?

Yes. The placenta makes ALP, so levels rise in the second half of pregnancy. Your doctor will take this into account.

Why is ALP higher in children?

Growing bones release ALP, so children and teenagers naturally have higher levels than adults.
