Anti-centromere antibody test
Quick answer: This blood test looks for antibodies against the centromere, a part of the chromosomes inside cells. Doctors usually order it when they suspect limited systemic sclerosis (CREST syndrome) or Raynaud's phenomenon, often after a positive ANA test.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
A positive result does not by itself confirm a disease, because some healthy people test positive; your doctor reads it with your symptoms and other tests.
If the result is outside the usual range
A positive result can be seen with limited systemic sclerosis (CREST syndrome), Raynaud's phenomenon and sometimes primary biliary cholangitis. A negative result does not rule out scleroderma, as many people with it carry other antibodies.
Who usually has this test
People with Raynaud's phenomenon, tight or thickened skin on the fingers, or a positive ANA with a centromere pattern.
Risks and aftercare
You may have a small bruise or slight soreness where the needle went in.

Questions about this test
Is anti-centromere antibody the same as a positive ANA?
Not exactly. A centromere pattern is often first seen on an ANA immunofluorescence test, and this test confirms that specific antibody. Your doctor may order both.
What is CREST syndrome?
CREST is an older name for limited systemic sclerosis. The letters stand for calcium deposits, Raynaud's, food pipe problems, finger skin tightening and small red spots on the skin. Anti-centromere antibodies are common in this form.
Does a positive anti-centromere test mean my lungs will be affected?
Not necessarily. People with this antibody tend to have the limited form of scleroderma. Some can develop high blood pressure in the lungs over many years, so your doctor may suggest regular heart and lung checks.
