What your results can mean
Reading your report
A positive result does not by itself confirm a disease, because some healthy people test positive; your doctor reads it with your symptoms and other tests.
If the result is outside the usual range
A positive result is fairly specific for systemic sclerosis, especially the diffuse form, and can be linked to a higher chance of lung scarring. A negative result does not rule out scleroderma.
Who usually has this test
People with skin thickening, Raynaud's phenomenon, finger ulcers or a positive ANA suggesting scleroderma.
Risks and aftercare
The needle site may feel tender for a day; your doctor may suggest breathing tests if the result is positive.

Questions about this test
What does a positive Scl-70 mean for my lungs?
People with this antibody have a higher chance of interstitial lung disease, a type of lung scarring. Your doctor may suggest breathing tests or a chest scan to check.
Can you have both Scl-70 and anti-centromere antibodies?
It is unusual. These antibodies tend to be linked to different forms of scleroderma, so most people have one or neither.
Is Scl-70 the same as a scleroderma test?
It is one of several scleroderma antibodies. Doctors diagnose scleroderma from your skin and other findings, with antibodies helping to confirm the type.
