Questions about this test
Is amylase or lipase better for pancreatitis?
Lipase is often preferred because it stays raised for longer and is more specific to the pancreas. Many doctors check both.
Does a very high amylase mean the pancreatitis is severe?
Not necessarily. The level does not show how severe pancreatitis is, so doctors use your symptoms, other blood tests and scans.
Can mumps or salivary gland problems raise amylase?
Yes. Salivary glands also make amylase, so swelling of these glands can raise it.
