Seminal fructose test
Quick answer: This test measures fructose, a sugar made by the seminal vesicles, in a semen sample. Doctors order it when a semen analysis shows no sperm or low semen volume, to check for a blockage or absent seminal vesicles.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
Discuss your result with your doctor together with your semen analysis.
If the result is outside the usual range
A low or absent level, especially with low semen volume, can point to a blockage of the ejaculatory ducts or absent or underdeveloped seminal vesicles. A normal level suggests the seminal vesicles are working.
Who usually has this test
Men whose semen analysis shows no sperm or low semen volume.
Risks and aftercare

Questions about this test
Why is fructose measured in semen?
Fructose is added to semen by the seminal vesicles. If it is missing, the vesicles may be absent or their ducts blocked.
Can I collect the sample at home?
Ask the lab. It must usually reach them within a short time, kept at body temperature, so many labs prefer collection on site.
What tests might follow an abnormal result?
Your doctor may suggest a scan through the back passage to look at the ducts, and sometimes genetic tests for cystic fibrosis gene changes.
