What your results can mean

Reading your report

Stress and some medicines can raise levels slightly, so a mildly high result is often repeated; discuss it with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A clearly high level can point to a phaeochromocytoma or paraganglioma, rare tumours that make adrenaline-type hormones. Mild rises are more often due to stress, posture, caffeine or some medicines.

Who usually has this test

People with spells of headache, sweating and palpitations, very high blood pressure, an adrenal lump on a scan, or a family history of these tumours.

Risks and aftercare

Bruising is possible, and you can return to normal activity.

Questions about this test

Why must I lie down before the blood draw?

Standing up raises noradrenaline and its breakdown products. Resting lying down lowers the chance of a falsely high result.

Which medicines can affect the result?

Some antidepressants, decongestants and blood pressure medicines can raise metanephrines. Tell your doctor about all your medicines, but do not stop any without advice.

Is a urine test an option instead?

Yes, a 24-hour urine test for metanephrines or catecholamines is another way to check. Your doctor will choose which suits your situation.
