What your results can mean
Reading your report

If the result is outside the usual range
A positive IgM can point to a recent parvovirus infection, which in children often causes a slapped-cheek rash. In pregnancy it can occasionally cause anaemia in the baby, so scans may be arranged.
Who usually has this test
Pregnant women after contact with slapped-cheek illness, adults with rash and joint pain, and people with certain anaemias.
Risks and aftercare
No special aftercare; tell your doctor if you are pregnant and have been in contact with an infected child.

Questions about this test
What is slapped cheek syndrome?
It is a common childhood illness caused by parvovirus B19. Children get bright red cheeks and a lacy rash and are usually only mildly unwell.
Why is IgG often tested with IgM in pregnancy?
IgG shows past infection and protection. Testing both helps tell whether you were already immune or had a recent infection.
What happens if I get parvovirus in pregnancy?
Most babies are not affected. Your doctor may arrange regular scans for a few weeks to check the baby for anaemia.
