What your results can mean

Reading your report

A positive IgM usually suggests a recent or current infection and a positive IgG a past infection or immunity, but your doctor will read the result alongside your symptoms.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive IgM can point to a recent Mycoplasma chest infection, often called walking pneumonia. It can be negative early in illness or stay positive for weeks, so results are read with symptoms.

Who usually has this test

Children and young adults with a lingering dry cough, fever and tiredness, or pneumonia that is not improving as expected.

Risks and aftercare

No special aftercare; finish any antibiotic course as prescribed.

Questions about this test

What is walking pneumonia?

It is a milder pneumonia where people often stay up and about. Mycoplasma is a common cause, especially in school-age children and young adults.

Why might my doctor use a swab instead of blood?

A throat or nose swab PCR can detect Mycoplasma directly, especially early. Blood IgM is useful later in the illness.

Can Mycoplasma infection spread at home?

Yes, it spreads through coughs and close contact. It often passes slowly through families or schools.
