Mastoid X-ray

What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A mastoid X-ray can show the air spaces behind the ear looking cloudy or reduced, which can be seen with long-standing infection (mastoiditis) or poor development of the air cells. It shows far less detail than a CT scan.
Who usually has this test
People with long-standing ear discharge, repeated ear infections, or swelling and pain behind the ear.
Risks and aftercare
You feel nothing and need no aftercare; the dose is low, and tell staff if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test
What is mastoiditis?
Mastoiditis is an infection of the bone behind the ear, usually spreading from a middle ear infection. It can cause swelling, redness and pain behind the ear and needs prompt treatment.
Is a mastoid X-ray or a CT scan better?
A CT scan shows the small bones and air spaces of the ear in much more detail and is usually preferred before ear surgery. A plain X-ray gives a simpler overview.
Why are both sides of the head X-rayed?
Comparing the two sides helps show whether one mastoid is different from the other. This makes changes on the affected side easier to see.
