Jaw joint (TMJ) X-ray
Quick answer: A TMJ X-ray shows the jaw joints just in front of the ears, with the mouth open and closed to see how they move. Doctors may order it for jaw pain, clicking, locking or difficulty opening the mouth.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
A radiologist reports on the images, and your doctor will explain what the findings mean for you.
If the result is outside the usual range
A TMJ X-ray can show wear or arthritis of the jaw joint, a fracture, or a joint that moves too little or too far when the mouth opens. The disc inside the joint does not show and needs an MRI if a disc problem is suspected.
Who usually has this test
People with jaw pain, clicking or locking, difficulty opening the mouth, or a jaw injury.
Risks and aftercare
Opening your mouth wide can be sore if the joint is painful, so open only as far as you can; the dose is low, and tell staff if you might be pregnant.

Questions about this test
Why is the TMJ X-rayed with the mouth open and closed?
Comparing the two pictures shows how far the jaw joint slides as you open. This helps show whether the joint moves too little or too much.
Can a TMJ X-ray show why my jaw clicks?
Clicking often comes from the soft disc inside the joint, which does not show on X-ray. The X-ray mainly checks the bones, and an MRI can show the disc.
Can teeth grinding cause jaw joint problems?
Grinding or clenching can strain the jaw muscles and joint and lead to pain. A dentist or doctor can advise on ways to manage it.
