What your results can mean

Reading your report

A positive IgM usually suggests a recent or current infection and a positive IgG a past infection or immunity, but your doctor will read the result alongside your symptoms.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive IgM can point to leptospirosis, which can cause fever, muscle pain and, in severe cases, jaundice and kidney problems. It may be negative in the first few days, so a repeat test may be needed.

Who usually has this test

People with fever, calf muscle pain, red eyes or jaundice after wading through flood water or working in fields or drains.

Risks and aftercare

Nothing special for the blood draw; severe symptoms such as reduced urine need urgent care.

Questions about this test

How common is leptospirosis after floods?

Cases often rise after heavy rains and flooding, as water mixes with rat urine. Covering cuts and wearing boots in flood water lowers the risk.

Why might the leptospira test be repeated?

IgM antibodies usually appear after about 5 to 7 days of illness. If tested early, the result may be negative even if you have it.

Is leptospirosis treatable?

Yes. Antibiotics work well, especially when started early. Severe cases may need hospital care.
