Herpes simplex virus (HSV 1 and 2) antibody test
Quick answer: This blood test measures antibodies against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, which cause cold sores and genital herpes. Doctors may order it when herpes is suspected and a swab is not possible, or to check past infection in some pregnancies.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
Most adults have HSV-1 IgG, and IgM can be falsely positive, so a blood test alone rarely confirms a new infection; discuss it with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
A positive HSV-1 IgG is common and usually means past oral herpes, while a positive HSV-2 IgG usually means past genital infection. A positive IgM alone is often unreliable, and a swab from a sore is better for a new outbreak.
Who usually has this test
People with sores where a swab cannot be taken, and some pregnant women or partners when past infection matters.
Risks and aftercare
No special aftercare; tell your obstetrician if you have ever had genital herpes.

Questions about this test
Can a blood test tell if a sore is herpes?
Not reliably. A swab taken from a fresh sore is the main test. A blood test shows past infection, not what caused a particular sore.
Does HSV-2 antibody mean I will pass herpes to my baby?
Most women with a past HSV-2 infection have healthy babies. The highest risk is with a first infection late in pregnancy, so tell your doctor about any history or new sores.
Can HSV antibody tests be falsely positive?
Yes, especially low-positive results and IgM. Doctors may repeat or confirm the result before giving advice.
