Glucose in CSF or body fluid
Quick answer: This test measures glucose (sugar) in the fluid around the brain and spinal cord (CSF) or in other body fluids. It helps doctors look for infection such as meningitis, or find the cause of fluid around the lungs, abdomen or joints.
- SampleFluid
- TakesAbout 20 to 40 minutes for the procedure
- Before the testFluid is collected by your doctor during a procedure; a blood glucose sample is often taken at the same time for comparison.
How the test is done
- 1For CSF, a doctor collects fluid from the lower back with a thin needle
- 2For other fluids, a needle is used to draw fluid from the chest, abdomen or joint
- 3A blood glucose sample is usually taken at the same time
- 4The lab compares glucose in the fluid with blood
What your results can mean
Reading your report
Fluid glucose is compared with blood glucose, so discuss your result with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
A low glucose in CSF or other fluid can be seen with bacterial or TB infection, and sometimes with cancer or inflammation. A normal level is more typical of viral infections.
Who usually has this test
People with possible meningitis, and people with fluid around the lungs, in the abdomen or in a joint where infection is possible.
Risks and aftercare
Rest after a lumbar puncture as advised; mild headache or soreness at the needle site can occur.

Questions about this test
Why is blood glucose measured with CSF glucose?
CSF glucose depends on blood glucose. Comparing them gives a ratio that is more useful than the CSF value alone.
What does low CSF glucose suggest?
It can suggest bacterial, fungal or TB meningitis, which need urgent treatment. Your doctor will look at other CSF tests too.
Is a lumbar puncture painful?
The area is numbed first, so most people feel pressure rather than sharp pain. Some feel brief discomfort.
