How the test is done

  1. 1You sit and roll up your sleeve
  2. 2A nurse cleans a vein near your elbow
  3. 3A needle draws blood into a tube
  4. 4The lab tests for antibodies to several gangliosides such as GM1 and GQ1b

What your results can mean

Reading your report

A positive result does not by itself confirm a disease, because some healthy people test positive; your doctor reads it with your symptoms and other tests.

If the result is outside the usual range

Positive antibodies can be seen with Guillain-Barre syndrome and its variants, such as GQ1b with Miller Fisher syndrome, and GM1 with multifocal motor neuropathy. A negative result does not rule out these conditions.

Who usually has this test

People with quickly spreading weakness or numbness, double vision with unsteady walking, or slowly progressive weakness in one hand or arm.

Risks and aftercare

A small bruise is possible; the nerve condition itself may need hospital care.

Questions about this test

Is Guillain-Barre syndrome diagnosed by this blood test?

Not alone. Doctors mainly rely on your symptoms, nerve conduction tests and sometimes spinal fluid. Antibodies help sort out which type it is.

Why does my report list several gangliosides?

Different gangliosides are linked with different nerve syndromes, so labs test a panel. Your doctor will explain which ones matter for your symptoms.

Can an infection trigger ganglioside antibodies?

Yes. Infections such as Campylobacter food poisoning can trigger antibodies that cross-react with nerves. This is one way Guillain-Barre syndrome starts.
