Neuronal antibody profile
Quick answer: This package tests your blood for a group of antibodies against nerve cells. The exact list of tests in this package is available from the hospital. Doctors usually order it when they suspect an autoimmune or paraneoplastic nerve condition, which can sometimes be linked to a hidden cancer.
- SampleBlood
- TakesAbout 5 minutes for the blood draw
- Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed.
How the test is done
- 1Staff confirm which nerve antibody package your doctor requested
- 2A nurse draws blood from a vein in your arm
- 3Sometimes spinal fluid is also requested and collected separately by a doctor
- 4The lab tests for several nerve antibodies and reports each one
What your results can mean
Reading your report
Each antibody is reported separately; your doctor reads the results with your symptoms and other tests.
If the result is outside the usual range
Positive antibodies such as Hu, Yo or Ri can be linked to paraneoplastic syndromes, where the immune system reacts to a hidden cancer. Weak positives can occur without disease, so results are read with symptoms and scans.
Who usually has this test
People with unexplained nerve, balance, memory or behaviour problems when an autoimmune or paraneoplastic cause is suspected.
Risks and aftercare
A small bruise is possible; your doctor may suggest scans depending on the result.

Questions about this test
What is a paraneoplastic syndrome?
It is a condition where the immune system, reacting to a cancer, also attacks the nervous system. Nerve symptoms can appear before the cancer is found.
Does a positive neuronal antibody mean I have cancer?
Not always. Some antibodies are strongly linked to cancer and others are not. Your doctor may arrange scans to look carefully.
Why might spinal fluid be tested as well as blood?
Some nerve antibodies are easier to detect in spinal fluid. Testing both can give a clearer answer.
