What your results can mean

Reading your report

Normal ranges differ between labs and by age and sex, so discuss your result with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A high level can point to exposure through work, such as smelting or glass and battery making, or through some antimony-based medicines. Your doctor reads it with your symptoms and exposure history.

Who usually has this test

Workers exposed to antimony, and people being treated with antimony-based medicines for some parasite infections.

Risks and aftercare

A small bruise at the needle site is possible.

Questions about this test

Where does antimony exposure usually come from?

Most exposure is through work, such as mining, metal smelting, and making batteries, glass or flame retardants. Some medicines for leishmaniasis also contain antimony.

Is urine or blood better for antimony testing?

Both can be used, and your doctor will choose based on the type and timing of exposure. Blood reflects more recent exposure.

What symptoms can high antimony cause?

It can cause stomach upset, skin rash, breathing irritation and, in high amounts, heart rhythm changes. Your doctor reads the result with your symptoms.
