Anti-DNase B test

Quick answer: This blood test measures antibodies against DNase B, an enzyme made by group A streptococcus bacteria. Doctors usually order it with ASO to show a recent strep infection, for example when rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation after strep is suspected.

What your results can mean

Reading your report

Levels stay raised for weeks after an infection and normal levels differ by age, so discuss your result with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A raised level can show a recent group A strep infection, including skin infections, and supports a diagnosis of rheumatic fever or post-strep kidney inflammation. Normal levels vary with age.

Who usually has this test

Children and adults with joint pain, heart murmur, swelling or dark urine a few weeks after a sore throat or skin infection.

Risks and aftercare

A small bruise is possible; children may want a little comfort afterwards.

Questions about this test

How is anti-DNase B different from ASO?

Both show a recent strep infection. Anti-DNase B stays raised longer and rises after skin infections too, where ASO may not, so the two are often tested together.

Can this test diagnose a current strep throat?

No. It shows a recent past infection. A throat swab is used to check for an infection happening now.

Why might the test be repeated?

A rising level between two samples taken a couple of weeks apart gives stronger evidence of a recent infection than a single result.
