What your results can mean

Reading your report

Normal ranges differ between labs and by age and sex, so discuss your result with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A high level can be seen with muscle damage or inflammation, such as muscular dystrophy or myositis, and sometimes with liver problems. Recent hard exercise or injury can also raise it.

Who usually has this test

People with muscle weakness, pain or suspected muscle disease, often when CK results need more context.

Risks and aftercare

Questions about this test

How is aldolase different from CK?

Both are muscle enzymes that rise with muscle damage. CK is used more often, but aldolase can sometimes be raised when CK is normal, especially in some inflammatory muscle conditions.

Why should I avoid exercise before the aldolase test?

Hard exercise causes minor muscle strain that can raise aldolase for a day or two. Resting first helps the result reflect any underlying problem.

Can liver problems raise aldolase?

Yes, aldolase is also found in the liver, so liver conditions can raise it. Your doctor reads it with other tests.
