Questions about this test
Why is PSA used more than acid phosphatase now?
PSA is more sensitive for early prostate problems and is easier to interpret. Acid phosphatase is now ordered only in specific situations.
Can a prostate examination raise acid phosphatase?
Yes. Prostate massage, examination or recent ejaculation can raise the level for a short time, so your doctor may ask you to avoid them first.
Is acid phosphatase found outside the prostate?
Yes. It is also found in bone, red blood cells and platelets, which is why total acid phosphatase can rise with some bone and blood conditions.
