What your results can mean

Reading your report

If the result is outside the usual range

A high random sugar can be seen with diabetes, stress, illness, steroid medicines or a recent sugary meal. A low reading can be seen with some diabetes medicines, long fasting, alcohol or rare hormone problems.

Who usually has this test

People with symptoms such as thirst, passing a lot of urine, tiredness or weight loss, people in emergencies, and those with diabetes checking control.

Questions about this test

Can a random blood sugar test diagnose diabetes?

A clearly high random sugar along with typical symptoms can be enough for doctors to diagnose diabetes. Without symptoms, a fasting sugar, HbA1c or glucose tolerance test is usually done to confirm.

What is the difference between RBS and fasting blood sugar?

Fasting blood sugar is taken after not eating for about 8 hours, so it shows your baseline. Random sugar is taken at any time, so it varies with what you last ate.

Why might my random sugar be high when I am unwell?

Illness, infection and stress release hormones that raise blood sugar. Some medicines such as steroids can also raise it. Your doctor may recheck once you are better.
