Anti-ovarian antibody test

Quick answer: This blood test looks for antibodies directed against ovarian tissue. Doctors may order it when they are looking for an autoimmune cause of early loss of ovarian function, though its value is limited.

  • TakesAbout 5 minutes
  • Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed.
  • In fertility careAutoimmunity is one possible cause of premature ovarian insufficiency, but mainstream guidance does not rely on this test, and ovarian reserve is judged with AMH, FSH and scans.

What your results can mean

Reading your report

A positive result does not by itself confirm a disease, because some healthy people test positive; your doctor reads it with your symptoms and other tests.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive result may hint at an autoimmune process affecting the ovaries, but it can be found in women with normal ovarian function too. A negative result does not rule out an autoimmune cause.

Who usually has this test

Women with early loss of periods or very low ovarian reserve, when doctors are looking for a cause.

Risks and aftercare

You may have a small bruise; no other aftercare is needed.

Questions about this test

Does a positive ovarian antibody test mean I cannot get pregnant?

No. The test does not measure how many eggs you have or your chance of pregnancy. Tests such as AMH and an ultrasound follicle count are more useful for that.

Why do guidelines not rely on ovarian antibodies?

The test gives many false positives and negatives. Guidelines for premature ovarian insufficiency suggest adrenal antibody and thyroid tests as more reliable autoimmune checks.

Should I ask for this test before IVF?

It is not part of routine IVF testing. Your fertility doctor can explain whether it adds anything in your situation.
