Questions about this test
What is the difference between BNP and NT-proBNP?
Both come from the same substance released by the heart. NT-proBNP lasts longer in the blood, and the two have different cut-offs, so they cannot be compared directly.
Can a normal NT-proBNP rule out heart failure?
A normal level makes heart failure much less likely in someone with breathlessness. Your doctor reads it with your symptoms and other tests.
Why is NT-proBNP repeated during treatment?
Falling levels can show that heart failure treatment is working. Your doctor may use it along with how you feel.
