What your results can mean
Reading your report
Antibodies can stay after past exposure, so your doctor reads the result with your symptoms and other tests.
If the result is outside the usual range
A positive result can show past or current exposure to filarial worms, which spread by mosquito bites. It cannot always tell an active infection from an old one, so doctors may also order antigen or blood smear tests.
Who usually has this test
People with swelling of a leg or arm, swollen glands or a high eosinophil count in areas where filariasis occurs.
Risks and aftercare
A small bruise can appear; keep any swollen limb clean and dry as your doctor advises.

Questions about this test
Why are filaria blood smears sometimes taken at night?
Some filarial worms release their young into the blood mainly at night. A night smear can catch them, though antigen tests now reduce the need for this.
Is filariasis still found in India?
Yes, in some districts, and the national programme gives mass medicines to lower spread. Karnataka has some affected areas.
Can filariasis cause swelling of the legs?
Yes. Long-term infection can damage lymph vessels and cause swelling, sometimes called elephantiasis. Early treatment and skin care help.
