Homocysteine test
Quick answer: A homocysteine test measures homocysteine, an amino acid that can build up when vitamin B12, folate or B6 are low or with some inherited conditions. Doctors order the blood test to look into B vitamin deficiency or blood clot risk; the urine test screens for an inherited condition called homocystinuria.

What your results can mean
Reading your report
Normal ranges differ between labs and by age and sex, so discuss your result with your doctor.
If the result is outside the usual range
A high level can be seen with low vitamin B12, folate or B6, kidney disease, some medicines or inherited conditions such as homocystinuria. A raised level is linked with a higher chance of blood clots.
Who usually has this test
People with possible B vitamin deficiency, unexplained clots, women with recurrent pregnancy loss, and children with features of homocystinuria.
Risks and aftercare
If you fasted, have a meal afterwards; the blood draw may leave a small bruise.

Questions about this test
Does folic acid lower homocysteine?
Yes. Folic acid, B12 and B6 help the body break down homocysteine. Your doctor will advise whether you need supplements.
Why is homocysteine checked in recurrent pregnancy loss?
Some doctors check it as part of looking for clotting or nutrition factors. Its role is still debated, so discuss the result with your doctor.
What is homocystinuria?
It is a rare inherited condition in which the body cannot process an amino acid, leading to very high homocysteine. It can affect the eyes, bones, brain and blood vessels.
