Chlamydia antibody test

Quick answer: This blood test measures antibodies against Chlamydia, a bacterium that can infect the genital tract or lungs. Doctors may order IgG as part of an infertility work-up to estimate the chance of tubal damage from a past infection.

  • SampleBlood
  • TakesAbout 5 minutes
  • Before the testNo special preparation is usually needed.
  • In fertility carePast chlamydia infection can block or damage the fallopian tubes, so a positive IgG may lead your doctor to check your tubes with an HSG or laparoscopy.

  4. 4The lab measures chlamydia IgG antibodies in your serum

What your results can mean

Reading your report

A blood antibody test cannot diagnose a current genital infection, which needs a swab or urine test, so discuss your result with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A positive IgG can show a past chlamydia infection and a higher chance of tubal damage. A negative result makes tubal damage from chlamydia less likely but does not rule out blocked tubes from other causes.

Who usually has this test

Women having a fertility work-up, to help decide how soon tube testing such as HSG or laparoscopy is needed.

Risks and aftercare

No special aftercare; a current infection needs a swab or urine test, not this blood test.

Questions about this test

Does a positive chlamydia IgG mean my tubes are blocked?

No. It shows past exposure and a higher chance of tubal damage, but many people with antibodies have open tubes. Your doctor may suggest a tube test such as HSG to check.

Can chlamydia cause infertility without symptoms?

Yes. Chlamydia often causes no symptoms, but it can inflame and scar the fallopian tubes. This is why it is sometimes called a silent cause of tubal infertility.

Should my partner be tested if my chlamydia antibody is positive?

A positive blood antibody shows past exposure, not current infection. If a current infection is suspected, both partners are usually tested with urine or swab tests and treated together.
