Questions about this test
What is Wilson disease?
It is an inherited condition in which copper builds up in the liver, brain and eyes. Early diagnosis matters because it can be treated.
Can I have Wilson disease with a normal ceruloplasmin?
Yes, some people do. Doctors also use urine copper, an eye check and sometimes a liver biopsy or genetic test.
Why does pregnancy raise ceruloplasmin?
Oestrogen increases ceruloplasmin, so levels are higher in pregnancy and with some birth control pills. This can hide a low level.
