What your results can mean

Reading your report

Normal ranges differ between labs and by age and sex, so discuss your result with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

A high level can be seen with phaeochromocytoma or paraganglioma, rare tumours that release these hormones. Stress, caffeine, smoking, some foods and medicines can also raise levels.

Who usually has this test

People with episodes of high blood pressure, pounding headaches, sweating and fast heartbeat, or a family history of these tumours.

Risks and aftercare

Questions about this test

Why do I need to rest before a blood catecholamine test?

Standing, stress and activity raise catecholamines. Lying quietly first helps show your resting level.

What should I avoid before a catecholamine test?

Coffee, tea, smoking, bananas, chocolate and vanilla are commonly listed, along with some medicines. Follow your doctor's list and do not stop medicines without advice.

Is a blood or urine test better?

Both are used. Many doctors now prefer tests for metanephrines, which are breakdown products, and your doctor will choose what suits you.
