What your results can mean

Reading your report

Ranges and cut-offs differ between labs and methods, so discuss your result with your doctor.

If the result is outside the usual range

In someone who has never used insulin, these antibodies can be an early sign of autoimmune (type 1) diabetes, mainly in children. In people on insulin, antibodies can form against the injected insulin and sometimes affect how well it works.

Who usually has this test

Children and young adults being checked for type 1 diabetes, and people on insulin whose sugar control is unexpectedly hard.

Risks and aftercare

No special aftercare is needed, though a small bruise can appear.

Questions about this test

Why does insulin treatment affect this test?

Injected insulin can lead the body to make antibodies against it. Most labs suggest testing before insulin is started, or within about a week of starting, to look for the body's own autoimmune antibodies.

Is the anti-insulin antibody test used to diagnose type 1 diabetes alone?

No. It is usually done with other diabetes autoantibodies such as GAD and IA-2. Having more than one antibody points more strongly to type 1 diabetes.

Can anti-insulin antibodies cause low blood sugar?

Rarely, a condition called insulin autoimmune syndrome causes antibodies that release insulin at the wrong time, leading to low sugar episodes. Your doctor would test for this only in specific situations.
