Anti-HBs (hepatitis B surface antibody) test

Quick answer: This blood test measures antibodies against the hepatitis B surface protein. They show protection from vaccination or past infection. Doctors usually order it to check whether hepatitis B vaccination has worked, for example in health workers, or to decide if you need the vaccine.

How the test is done

  1. 1A nurse confirms your details and vaccine history
  2. 2A vein on your arm is cleaned
  3. 3A needle collects a tube of blood
  4. 4The lab measures the level of hepatitis B surface antibody

What your results can mean

Reading your report

Labs report a level in mIU/mL and the protective cut-off they use; discuss with your doctor whether you need a booster.

If the result is outside the usual range

A level above the lab's protective cut-off usually means you are protected, from vaccination or past infection. A low or absent level can mean the vaccine has not worked, protection has faded, or you have never been vaccinated.

Who usually has this test

Health workers, people after a hepatitis B vaccine course, partners of people with hepatitis B, and people on dialysis.

Risks and aftercare

No special aftercare; your doctor may suggest a booster or full vaccine course depending on the level.

Questions about this test

When should anti-HBs be checked after vaccination?

It is usually checked about 1 to 2 months after the last vaccine dose. Testing much later may show a low level even if you were protected at first.

What if my anti-HBs stays low after vaccination?

Your doctor may suggest another vaccine course and a repeat test. A small number of people do not respond even after two courses.

Is anti-HBs needed before IVF?

It is not always required, but some clinics check it, especially if a partner has hepatitis B. If you are not protected, you may be offered the vaccine.
