Dating from the last period assumes ovulation around day 14. A first-trimester scan is more accurate.

Common questions

Why is pregnancy dated from before conception?

Because the date of the last period is usually known and the date of conception usually is not. It adds roughly two weeks compared with counting from conception.

My cycles are not 28 days. Is this accurate?

Less so. Longer cycles mean later ovulation, so this will overestimate how far along you are. A dating scan resolves it.

Counted from the first day of the last menstrual period, assuming ovulation around day 14. If your cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, this over- or under-estimates. Ultrasound dating in the first trimester is more accurate and is what maternity care uses.
